Vikram Phadnis is taking a six-month hiatus to script his debut film
For nearly two decades now Vikram Phadnis has dressed up the divas of Bollywood be it Priyanka Chopra in Mujhse Shaadi Karogi,Katrina Kaif in Namaste London,Sushmita Sen in Dulha Mil Gaya or Ayesha Takia in Salaam-e-Ishq. Now,the choreographer-turned-designer is set to explore new avenues. I am currently working on the script of my debut film, says Phadnis, who was in Chandigarh recently to formally inaugurate Raffles Millennium International,a design institute with its new campus in Sector 25,their fourth centre in India after Mumbai,Delhi and Bangalore.
Phadnis, who has had successful runs at several fashion weeks,is taking a six-month break from his routine task of designing costumes. Sometime back,I started working on a script but it did not materialise. My fashion assignments kept me neck deep in work, he adds.
While one would assume his film the designer had earlier tried adapting the Hollywood film Step Mom that Karan Johar went on to make would deal with fashion,Phadnis reveals it is not so. The script deals with relationships, he answers. Phadnis, who considers Salman Khan the style icon of Bollywood,is yet to zero in on the cast for his film. I have many favourites but in the end well see what works out best, he says.
Phadnis has also decided to direct his debut film project later in the year,a decision, which unlike most others in his life,is pre-planned. I enjoy ramp shows but films offer a larger canvas,a stronger medium to showcase ones work. My designs might reach out to a few thousand people but a film audience might go up to a billion, especially when showcased in both India and abroad, he signs off.
