‘Curious’ case for BQC

It's been four years since Bournvita Quiz Contest (BQC) was last aired on the national network.

It’s been four years since Bournvita Quiz Contest (BQC) was last aired on the national network. Come August 14,the much anticipated quiz show returns to telly — this time on India’s leading General Entertainment Channel (GEC) — Colors. In fact, the show is back on air owing to a huge public demand.

It’s the result of a hugely popular online movement on Facebook http://www.facebook.com/bringbqcback and various blog sites, where people expressed their support for BQC.

The Facebook group was joined by 160,000 fans within four months with one-liners such as ‘Don’t be Stupid,Bring BQC Back’,which were then converted into banners and badges and put up on the webpage. Everyone was curious to have BQC and its popular host — Derek O’Brien — back on screen.

The format of the show has been realigned to showcase some interesting and exciting twists — blending entertainment and education. “We are excited with the exceptional response received on Facebook to bring back BQC,” says Narayan Sundararaman,Director for Powdered Beverages,Gum & Candy,Cadbury India, the title sponsors.

This time,BQC will also offer audiences a chance to feature on the show as part of the “Main Bhi Quizmaster” segment. People are invited to post their videos on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/bournvitaquizcontest and one lucky winner in each episode gets a chance to be a guest quizmaster.

The Cadbury Bournvita Quiz Contest started out in 1972 as a live quiz show held across India and has since been the country’s longest running quiz show. It then moved to radio, before being picked up in the Nineties by channels such as Zee TV and Sony for a TV version. The original hosts of the live show were Hamid Sayani and later, his brother Ameen Sayani. But BQC’s most popular host has been Derek O’Brien, who has since authored several quiz books as well.
