CTU: Size of buses makes them difficult to drive

The bus fleet in the city carries 90 per cent of its passenger-carrying capacity.

The bus fleet in the city carries 90 per cent of its passenger-carrying capacity. The design of the city however, does not allow for deeper bus entry into neighbourhood of sectors. A discussion on buses as modes of public transport was held at a conference organised by Centre for Science and Environment.

Representatives of Chandigarh Transport Undertaking highlighted that the large size of the buses was proving to be a problem for them. The drivers were finding it difficult to manouver the buses on the city roads. These were causing more accidents and the blame was being put on the drivers.

It was also highlighted that with the increase in the size of the buses, the rear wheel of the bus was now behind the door. This was also proving to be dangerous.

It was opined that bus fleet utilization in Chandigarh was good at 95 per cent in contrast to 80 per cent in Delhi. But the bus usage is very low with only 16 per cent of all travel trips in contrast to 40 per cent in Delhi being through buses. Bus numbers have stagnated over time and bus infrastructure has not expanded. Its movement is also restricted.

The attempts of the UT Administration to purchase buses have not borne fruit. In fact the funds that were allocated last year lapsed as buses could not be purchased.

The CSE review shows that almost all state governments tax buses more than cars. In Chandigarh, the one-time registration tax that cars costing up to Rs 6 lakh pay works out to Rs 533.33 – Rs 800 per year. But a bus pays Rs 4,200 a year. Experts opined that this needs to be reversed to reduce the overall cost of bus operations and make them viable.

Also the diesel prices have been hiked for bulk buyers by Rs 10 per litre which is affecting buses. For cars the hike is 50 paise per litre at a time. In Chandigarh fuel cost of 28 per cent of the operational cost.
