The Punjab and Haryana High Court today admitted an appeal filed by Sohan Singh Thandal, former minister and Chief Parliamentary Secretary, challenging his conviction. Justice KC Puri also issued notices to the Punjab government on Thandal’s appeal challenging the three-year rigorous imprisonment awarded to him by a lower court in a case of corruption.

The court has also extended the bail granted to Thandal till the next date of hearing,August 2. Appearing on behalf of Thandal, senior advocate Randeep Singh Rai assisted by Advocate Gautam Dutt contended that the amount received as DA (daily allowance) has not been included in the calculation of the total income.

Rai argued the “amount of DA received by the appellant as an MLA is Rs 1,09,400 and the amount of daily allowance received by the appellant as a minister is approximately Rs 81,300. Thus the total amount of money received as DA is Rs 1,90,700. The difference between the total expenditure and total income after taking into account the above amount would be reduced to Rs 2,48,280 thus bringing the case within the accepted variation of 10 per cent”.
