The crime branch of the Chandigarh Police on Monday claimed to have busted two vehicle lifter gangs who had been active in the Tricity for some time. The police have arrested six persons and recovered 24 motorcycles and three chassis from the accused. With the arrest of these two gangs,the police claim to have solved five cases of motor vehicle theft reported in the city.
The accused of the first gang have been identified as Parmod (27) and Mangat Ram(24) both residents of Mauli Jagran,Chandigarh. Based on information from the two,Rajesh Kumar(39),a resident of Mauli Jagran and Babla(42),a resident of Manimajra were arrested for buying stolen items. While Kumar is an auto mechanic and runs a shop Partap Motor in Manimajra,Babla ran a scrap business.
During the course of investigation,both Mangat and Parmod also confessed to having stolen over a dozen motorcycles from Panchkula and Mohali and abandoning them later after taking out their batteries. Mangat also confessed to have sold a stolen motorcycle to Babla which led to his arrest.
The duo used to steal motorcycles and scooters and sell them to Kumar.
Satbir Singh,Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP CRIME) said,Parmod and Mangat have cases of snatching registered against them in Panchkula. We expect further recovery from the accused during the course of further investigation.
The three were presented in the court of the Chief Judicial Magistrate who remanded Rajesh and Mangat to police remand till October 7. Parmod was remanded to police custody till October 5.
In a separate case,police arrested Gangandeep (21),a resident of Mohali and Joshi Kumar (19),a resident of LBS Colony,Sector 56 and recovered two stolen motorcycles from their possession.
