The Congress party on Friday accused the ruling SAD leaders of being hand in glove with investors and financers to harm the interest of farmers in the garb of development of the state.
Addressing a press conference here, former minister Jagmohan Singh Kang,Kharar MLA Balbir Sidhu and PPCC Secretary Gurkirat Singh Kotli alleged that the Lalru-Baddi and Mohali-Phagwara expressways had been conceived with the sole objective to benefit the financers and investors besides the leaders, who possessed land along the proposed six-lane highways.
Instead of concentrating on basic vital needs, expressways have been mooted at whopping estimates of Rs 5,000 crore, which involved acquisition of 6,000 acres under cultivation, they pointed out.
Accusing the SAD-BJP government of pushing Punjab backward on all fronts, the Congress leaders suggested that instead of an expressway from Lalru to Baddi, the existing Lalru-Banur-Landran-Kurali road be widened and strengthened. Similarly, they advised to drop the Mohali-Phagwara expressway project by widening the existing Mohali to Phagwara via Nawanshahr highway.
