While calls received by the Central Board of Secondary Education’s regional helpline for Class X this year has risen by 50 per cent compared to last year’s records, the counsellors state that this time around, instead of stress related queries it was the board’s new changes that had students worried.

According to the counsellors, the introduction of grading system in 2009 and division of the academic year into two semesters under the Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation (CCE) system this year have reduced stress levels and apprehension among students.

During this year’s board examinations, however, there was widespread confusion over the newly introduced internal assessments system and the option of choosing school-based board exams.

“From February to June,we received at least 40 calls per day. Surprisingly, there were very few students who talked about problems like loss of appetite, sleep, confusion over subjects and difficulty in preparation. Rather, most students and parents enquired about the difference in school-based and CBSE-based board patterns,” said Rakesh Sachdeva,Chief CBSE counselor in the region and Principal of DAV Public School,Sector 15.

“A number of students were also confused between the different assessment patterns in CCE. Many of them asked whether their formative assessments marks will affect their final grades. The scenario was the same among both government and private school students this time,” added Sachdeva.

Another reason for the rise in the number of calls was the 15-day delay in publishing results. Under the CCE system, the academic year has been divided into two semesters and students are assessed through summative and formative examinations.

The yearly evaluation per subject has been split in two parts in such a way that the evaluation in first semester examinations contributes 60 per cent and second semester (board examination) contributes 40 per cent to the final grade.
