Colluding parents
Sitting on the edge of their seats, lawyers and other necessary parties were anticipating a marathon of heated arguments between seniormost lawyers of Punjab,Haryana and Chandigarh. The dispute was on the augmentation of water supply scheme of Kajauli. Alas, the party was spoiled after the Punjab Advocate General Ashok Aggarwal came up with a novel argument. Four years after arguing the petition, the senior lawyer said that the High Court was not competent to hear the case. Reason: the dispute was inter state. Hence, the Supreme Court, alone, can entertain the petition,Aggarwal averred. What was even more surprising was that the Haryana Advocate General not only supported the averment raised by his counterpart but also stoutly demanded that the case be heard by the Apex Court. Split between its states, what he termed as parents, the UT counsel was shocked. Those watching the proceedings termed it as collusion by the two parents.
Focused
Having not been able to crack the coveted UPSC examination in two attempts,Sonia Mahajan,a city girl, refused to get discouraged. Drawing inspiration from her two unsuccessful attempts, the 26-year-old has been able to clear the examination in her third attempt. An alumni of Gurswami Ganesh Dutta Sanatan Dharam College (GGDSD) College,Sector 32,Sonia has secured the 150th rank, making her parents and family proud. Sonia has studied in SD college from 2004-2010 and did her BSc and MSc in Bioinformatics from the college. Focused and determined,Sonia was preparing since 2009. In her first attempt she could not clear the main written examination and in the second, she could not clear the interview. No regrets, smiles Sonia.
Readymade Issue
The BJP leaders in the city found an election issue thrown into their laps with the arrest of Vijay Singla, nephew of Union Minister for Railways Pawan Kumar Bansal for allegedly accepting a bribe. In fact, the BJP,which had already planned a protest on May 4 over the issue of Sarabjit Singh, instead protested against Bansal as the issue emerged a day prior to their programme.
Wrongly Challaned?
A resident of Sector 37 faced a peculiar situation after a team from Municipal Corporation issued a challan against him for wastage of water after a wet patch was seen outside his house. The harried resident went to the area councillor Arun Sood and informed that a dog had urinated in front of his house that was the cause of the wet patch. The councillor then visited the spot to examine the situation first hand and raised the issue in the House.
Uncontrolled menace
Monkey menace is becoming a headache, not only for the residents of the city but for the officials of the UT administration. First the officials were able to help the residents by sending langurs out whenever required but now with the ban orders on langurs, the officials are finding it difficult to do anything about the numerous complaints that keep pouring in.So much so that officials of the forest department are even requesting the media persons not to highlight the issue of monkey menace at all until the department finds another solution to the ever-growing problem.
Last laugh
Such was the passion running among local fans that every time Vijayant Malik earned a point, they went into a frenzy. After local favourite Sanam Singh pulled out of the ITF mens futures tennis tournament,Vijayant, the former CHART trainee, was expected to lead the city charge. On Saturday,he came close to winning the title that Sanam had won last year. However,it was Saketh Myneni who had the last laugh as he defeated him in the final. He seemed to enjoy dashing local hopes by defeating the local player in his own den.
Humble
IPL season six has been a phenomenal one for West Indies cricketer Chris Gayle who plays for Royal Challengers Bangalore. After smashing a ruthless 176 runs against the Pune Warriors India match a few days back,Gayle has become a favourite among the fans. The amount of hysteria that is created when cricketers like Sachin Tendulkar,MS Dhoni and Sourav Ganguly walk in an area, was seen when RCB team arrived at a Chandigarh hotel ahead of their IPL match against KXIP. The shutterbugs and the fans followed Gayle upto the hotel lobby. And the West Indian too obliged them with poses and a smile.
Peek-a-boo
In a race to get exclusive pictures and information, the city journalists here were trying to hide in the fleet from each other outside Vijay Singlas residence who was arrested by CBI. Everyone was in a race to find a spot from where they could have got an exclusive shot. pretending to be ignorant about each others presence, the Congress supporters would have won,had it been a competition to seem ignorant. Despite the fact that electronic media was giving a live telecast, when asked by a few supporters, they said,we do not know what is going on.
Loyalty
The tremors which jolted the region last week left one of the Chandigarh Police officers in a quandary. Sitting on the fifth floor of the UT Police headquarters, the officer thought nobody was going to survive the tremors. Not caring a hoot about his own life, the loyal officer rang up his seniors on the ground floor. Sir,its an earthquake,I cannot go to a safe place, but you please ensure your safety, urged the officer. Now,aint that noble!
