The right size

Panjab University Vice-Chancellor Prof R C Sobti has set a ‘unique’ precedence of honouring the delegates with a coat and a tie along with the prevailing tradition of shawls. During the 93rd Annual Conference of Indian Economic Association held at the Panjab University recently, the V-C honoured all the delegates (around a dozen including Montek Singh Ahluwalia) by making them wear an off-white coat on the stage itself. When asked about this innovative idea and how he managed to get the right sizes,he replied in a very self-satisfying manner: “After putting in some amount of planning and homework,I got these coats made in 40 and 42 sizes. While I was honouring the delegates,I made sure the right size was handed over to me that could fit each of them.”

Another feather in the cap

City-based Chaitanya Hospital,well-equipped with the state-of-the-art equipment to provide sophisticated intensive care to critically sick new-born babies, has added another feather to its cap. The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit of the hospital has been recognised by the Neonatology chapter of the Indian Academy of Pediatricts for IAP-Neonatology Fellowship Programme. This would imply that any student who has completed the MD or DNB course in Pediatrics from any recognised university in the country would be eligible for a one-year fellowship programme at the hospital. It is only one of the three such centres in the country made eligible for the fellowship, according to

Dr Neeraj Kumar,Managing Director and HOD,Paediatrics.

Every day is now precious for CM

Nowadays,Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal seems to be an extra busy man. This octogenarian Akali stalwart, who is known for his punctuality, this week held three sangat darshan programmes in Mohali and Ropar districts in a span of four days. Not bothered by heavy rain on Thursday or New Year eve on Friday,Badal went to remote areas to interact with villagers. Ask him the reason behind sangat darshan spree,CM says,“Every day is precious”. Agrees his political opponents: “With the next Punjab Assembly elections nearing,Badal is on poll race.” However, contrary to the general perception and official rhetoric, such programmes are more or less stage-managed shows. No person is allowed to appear before the CM unless he is properly questioned on his purpose of appearing before the CM; even the memorandums and complaints that anybody wants to submit to the CM are first scanned by the officials concerned.

The mysterious writer

Brig KS Chandpuri (Retd) who was the presiding officer of the elections to the post of Mayor received a letter on the morning of the election. The writer who identified himself as Ram Kareem Singh while asking Brig Chandpuri not to allow mobile phones with cameras while voting added that he would be present in the House during the election and watch the proceedings. Even while Brig Chandpuri accorded a warm welcome to him, many kept on struggling hard to spot the mysterious writer in the visitors’ gallery of the House.
