Class X grading system may hamper centralised admission process

Confusion s likely to mark the admission season next session as the Administration is yet to decide on centralised admissions in view of the grading system of the Central Board of Secondary Examination.

Confusion s likely to mark the admission season next session as the Administration is yet to decide on centralised admissions in view of the grading system of the Central Board of Secondary Examination.

Deciding the cut-off percentage for admission to various streams will pose a problem as students will be awarded grades rather than the marks according to the new plan.

As there is no official word from the Administration on the matter yet, private as well as government schools are left in the lurch.

“Grading means there will not be any marks which would make it difficult to allot seats to deserving students. Since cut-offs can easily be deduced,it leaves no room for anomalies,” says Dr Rakesh Sachdeva, principal,DAV Model School,Sector 15.

Though schools have welcomed the grading system, they are equally apprehensive about its impact on the centralised admission system. They feel it would complicate the process which was developed with an aim to grant hassle free admissions.

“With so many students having the same grade vying for limited seats,it will be an uphill task to decide on who the more meritorious student. It may soften the cut-throat competition among students to seek admission in the best school, but the purpose with which centralised admission was started would stand defeated in view of the disarray it will cause,” said a principal of a government school.

Meanwhile, the Administration expressed ignorance about marks not being awarded to students once the new marking scheme is implemented.

Talking to Newsline,Home Secretary Ram Niwas said,“We are not aware that students will only be graded and not marked nor any school has taken up the matter with us. If this is the case, then we will definitely work out a system for the centralised admission very shortly.”
