PU Sikh Studies hold condolonce meeting
To mourn the sad demise of former chairperson of Guru Nanak Sikh Studies Department at Panjab University Prof Harnam Singh Shan,faculty members and research scholars of the department held a condolence meeting today. Prof Shan was a well-known Sikh scholar. Recognising his contributions,present chairperson of the department Jaspal Kaur Kaang said that he was very efficient and active in his academic activities. He presented many research papers,imparting knowledge of many spheres of Medieval Punjabi Literature. She added that he chaired many seminars and conferences in India and abroad and spread knowledge of Guru Granth Sahib all over. With his death,the Sikh world has felt a shock and irreparable loss,she said. Prof. Darshan Singh,former Chairperson of the Department,said that Prof Shans demise has caused a great loss to the academic community.
Cancer presentation held in PU
Prof RC Sobti,Vice-Chancellor,Panjab University inaugurated a special audio/visual presentation on Breast and Cervix Cancer in the Senate Hall on the university campus today. Dr Firuza Patel,Professor (Radiotherapy),PGIMER gave the presentation. The presentation was organised by Amrit Cancer Foundation,Chandigarh in association with Institute of Health,Panjab University. More than 100 women employees were physically examined. Dr Firuza advised the women employees to be vigilant against this disease. She also advised the women to undertake mammography and Pap-Smear test to diagnose the disease at an early stage. Dr Firuza added that breast cancer can be it can be cured completely.
Former PU professor to speak in Germany
Prof VK Jindal,Emeritus Scientist of CSIR,former professor of physics and coordinator of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology Programme,Panjab University has been invited by the University of Wuerzburg (Germany) to participate and speak in Euro-India week being celebrated at Wuerzburg from July 1 to 8,2011. This meet invites all international alumni of that University. Prof Jindal has been the recipient of Fulbright fellowship (US),Third World Academy of Sciences Grants Awards Scheme (Italy) and Alexander von Humboldt Fellowship (Germany).
Counselling for engineering aspirants
Expertos,a group of students from University Institute of Engineering and Technology (UIET),Panjab University; IIT Roorkee; Delhi College Of Engineering,Delhi; NIT Jalandhar,PEC University of Engineering and Technology; Thapar University,Patiala and Chandigarh Engineering College; conducted a two day counselling session at the English Department,Panjab University campus for all successful All
India Engineering Entrance Examination candidates on June 9 and 10.A total of 87 students along with their parents participated in the counselling session where all their queries were answered by the engineering graduates. The session educated the aspiring students on different engineering streams to enable them to make the right choices during the All India Engineering Entrance Examination counselling starting from June 11 to be conducted by the central counselling board.
Coaching classes for UGC students
The three-week coaching classes for University Grants Commission National Eligibility Test (UGC NET) for SC/ST/OBC and minority community organised by the Department of Life Long Learning and Extension (DLLL&E),Panjab University,concluded today. Ajaib Singh,DLLL&E feedback from students shall be taken and based on their observations,they will modify the course for future batches.
