Child dies in hospital, parents allege negligence

The hospital authorities , however, refuted the allegations, saying the matter would be looked into.

The parents of a three-year-old boy who died at Government Multi-Specialty Hospital (GMSH), Sector 16, on Wednesday alleged that a nurse had given a “wrong injection” to the child, leading to his death. The parents and a few relatives staged a protest at the hospital and did not let doctors do a post-mortem examination on the body. They also lodged a complaint with the police.

The father of the deceased child, Ram Kumar, told Chandigarh Newsline that his son Himanshu had been admitted to the hospital for the past eleven days after he complained of stomach pain and vomiting. Kumar said his son had been responding well to the treatment and had recovered from his illness. However, Kumar alleged that on on Wednesday a nurse gave Himanshu an injection, after which he started complaining of dizziness. Himanshu lost consciousness and died, Kumar said.

The child’s mother, Babita, alleged that the nurse who was attending to her son gave a “wrong injection” that caused his death. The couple demanded action against the nurse concerned and also alleged that the hospital administration of shiedling “a doctor and the nurse.”

Ravi, a relative of the deceased, said they refused to get the post-postmortem of the child done at the hospital and demanded that it be done at PGI.

“They did not give us the body of the child and said that it could be handed over to them only after the post-mortem but we refused. They later handed over the body and we will take it to PGI on Thursday,” said Ravi.

The hospital authorities , however, refuted the allegations, saying the matter would be looked into.
