Chandigarh MC rejects proposal to make Rs 2.5-cr wall around dumping ground

Commissioner says there are ways to stop people from throwing garbage.

The commissioner of the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation, Bhawna Garg, did not find much utility in the project of the construction of a wall around the dumping ground as proposed by the area councillor.

Garg, during her visit with chief engineer Mukesh Anand, said there are other ways to stop people from throwing garbage there like providing dustbins instead of spending a whopping amount of Rs 2.5 crore.

Garg had visited the site recently after area councillor Sat Prakash Aggarwal took up in the House that a raised wall may be constructed around the dumping ground so that people may not throw garbage.

An estimate of around Rs 2.5 crore for an 11-ft wall were also made by the engineering wing.

Aggarwal said, “The present wall of around five feet is not sufficient. People throw garbage directly from their houses and it creates a mess. A raised wall would check this, but now how can they say there isn’t any utility.”

He added, “It may be a matter of Rs 2.5 crore or Rs 250 crore or Rs 2. But for the health and convenience of residents, this has to be done. I will take up the matter again. We had raised this issue before the adviser as well.”

Aggarwal was also upset with the MC team of officials visiting the site without informing him. “The worst part is that when officials are visiting my ward, shouldn’t they inform me? MC officials are coming and the area councillor is not even informed.”
