Chandigarh boy Mayank Jain made Tricity proud by securing an all-India rank of 68 in the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Advanced, the results of which were declared on Sunday morning.

Mayank, 17, a resident of Sector 4, Panchkula, aims to pursue a degree in computer science from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay. His father, Abhishek Jain, owns a plywood business, and his mother, Pooja Jain, is a homemaker. Mayank has a younger brother who is in Class 6.

Mayank, who scored 99.98 percentile in the JEE Main results announced in April, said he used to study eight to ten hours daily. For short breaks to rejuvenate himself, Mayank used to play badminton with his younger brother and then get back to study.

“Self-study is highly important. Because that’s where you realise where you are lacking and where you need to clear your thoughts,” Mayank told The Indian Express.

His father Abhishek Jain said, “Mayank was so focused that he kept himself away from everything for the last two years, outings, family events, phone and everything. He feared falling behind in his classes when he had a fever.”

The father added, “We can say that he had put a restraint on himself for two years. He said until then he would not clear it, he would neither go on long outings nor do anything that distracts him.”

The family stated that much before the exams were to begin, they went to Ayodhya to pay obeisance at the Ram Temple as part of a family ritual, but Mayank chose to miss even that.

“He said it would take three days and he would miss catching up on the syllabus. Because after coming back from a holiday, you needed time to reorient yourself, he would say,” the father said.

“He wanted to distance himself from all distractions. He would even leave his phone on the ground floor and study on the second floor,” the father added.

Mayank, who completed Class 10 from Bhavan Vidyalaya, Sector 27, and Class 12 from Gurukul Global School, is set to be the family’s first engineering student.

“We come from a business family and never pushed our child to take a particular stream. It was just from the very beginning he wanted to pursue engineering. My younger son has an immense interest in cricket. So, we will never force him also to go Mayank’s way,” Abhishek said.
