Centralised patient database likely soon

The community health centres and government hospitals may soon share patient details, with the Society for Promotion of IT in Chandigarh mooting a proposal for Hospital Management Information System.

The community health centres and government hospitals may soon share patient details, with the Society for Promotion of IT in Chandigarh (SPIC) mooting a proposal for Hospital Management Information System (HMIS).

The SPIC,set up under the aegis of the Department of Information Technology,Chandigarh Administration, has proposed that the two government hospitals and the community health centres should have a centralised patient database.

The hospitals — Government Medical College and Hospital,Sector 32 and Government Multi-Specialty Hospital,Sector 16 — will be linked to health centres in Sector 22 and 45 and the polyclinic in Manimajra.

According to the proposal, once a patient has visited any health centre or hospital, his or her record will be uploaded on the common database and be accessible from all places.

The record will contain details about the patient, the ailment, the departments visited, tests conducted and treatment given.

IT Director Yogesh Kumar said the proposal was awaiting clearance from the health department.

“The first step will be to ensure that all departments within the hospital or the community health centre are connected,” he said. “Once this is done, the connectivity between the institutes will be established. We expect the project to be cleared by the department.”

The new system,he said, would be beneficial for both patients and doctors.

With a centralised system, the details of patients referred from health centres to hospitals will be easily available. In case a patient has to visit more than one department in a hospital, there will be no need for repeated registrations. It will also be easier to consult experts in case of complications.
