High drama was witnesses outside the income tax office on Monday afternoon after officials of the CBI caught an I-T official red-handed while accepting a bribe of Rs 25,000.

The official,Ranjit Singh, was chased down by the CBI officers after he tried to escape. He was later nabbed and beaten up.

Subhash Sehgal,a local property dealer, had lodged a complaint with the CBI against the I-T official and a local advocate. This property dealer had alleged that Ranjit Singh was demanding a bribe to withdraw the income tax notices served to him. While Singh had demanded Rs 50,000 the final deal was struck at Rs 25,000 and the payment was to be made today. The property dealer asked Ranjit Singh and his lawyer Gaurav Kansal to come out of the office and take the money.

The packet was first taken by Gaurav who later handed it over to Singh and it was then that a team of CBI,led by Additional Superintendent of Police Karnail Singh nabbed Singh.

The arrest also brought to light the nexus between income tax officials and lawyers in the town. A businessman said,“A section of lawyers first pass on our financial information to the income tax officials who send us notices and then they ask for bribes.”
