With the new session underway in Panjab University,we check out some of its most popular canteens and what’s cooking there

Think of a college campus and the canteen is where most of the action seems to be. It is here that gossip,studies and controversies take place,friends are made and love bonds broken. This is also where one gets the fuel to tackle the day. We take a look at some of the best canteens in Panjab University:

Students’ Centre: Popularly known as StuCee,it’s got a gravitational pull that attracts everybody,department notwithstanding. With 12pm to 2pm designated as the peak hour,the canteens offer one of the widest selections of snacks. Check out the kathi rolls,chicken naan and ice tea. But for those who prefer South Indian fare,the Coffee House is the place to be. With Joy,who’s been around since 1983,to serve,you really can’t go wrong here.

Top Pick: Idli (Rs 16) and chana kulcha (Rs 25)

University Business School: The staff is overworked,the process of getting the food is chaotic and there’s a constant rush of students,but the canteen,called Tea Pee O,scores by offering one of the most popular dishes prepared to lip-smacking perfection. “Check out their rajma chawal which has students from all departments flocking here. The canteen is spacious and we can also eat out in the open,” says Amit Gulati,a second year MBA student.

Top pick: Hot Dog (Rs 10) and Maggie noodles (Rs 15)

MCM College:Even those who are not students of this college want to sneak in for a quick bite at its canteen. Done up in bright yellow and orange,it boasts a menu that includes panipuri,chana chawal and sandwiches. The piece de resistance here is,of course,the chaat . For those who enjoy golgappas,the MCM College canteen has 10 different varieties on offer. And,of course,the action here doesn’t stop with classes getting over for the day. The MCM College canteen is also open in the evenings. But if you want to chill out French style,howevera,then the Alfresco,a small counter outside the caaanteen,offers healthy bites with whole wheat breads.

GCG College:Decked in purple,the canteen of GCG College lives up to its reputation of being trendy. “The fancy sitting of 10 tables make it an ideal place to relax,” says Ravineet,a BA final year student of GCG College. The exhaustive menu includes samosas,pav bhaji and spring rolls though it’s the grilled sandwich that has the maximum takers. With innumerable carts dotting the campus,one can also indulge in pindi channa,washing it down with nimbu pani and fresh juices. Like most college cafeterias,one can have a complete meal for less than Rs 40. When the weather permits,the surrounding area changes into a picnic zone with students sitting out with their tidbits.

Top pick: Grilled Sandwich at Nescafe (Rs 30)

DAV College:Walking up to the canteen of the college is enough to work up your appetite. While the Indian Coffee House is nestled on the first floor of the main building,dishing out mouthwatering masala dosas and coffee,the main canteen,next to the library,lures with an offering of samosa,kachori and bread pakora .

The décor is minimal,white interiors with black steel furniture that can seat 40. The USP of the college canteen is that here you can buy fresh fruit as well as fresh juice.

Top Pick: Samosa (Rs 5) and bread pakora (Rs 5)

SD College:One of the few canteens that overlooks the sprawling lawns at SD College,the Nestle kiosk is the place to be seen. “It’s a place to relax,sing,play and eat,it’s got the complete mood,” says Aparna Sharma,a BA second year student as she nurses her cold coffee. With students crowding the campus in the free periods,the fastest moving items are samosas,Maggie noodles and kadhi chawal . During Navratra,it is the juice (Rs 20) that notches up maximum sale.
