Campaigning for the Sukhjit Kaur, widow of Amarjit Singh Sahi, who represented the seat and whose demise earlier this month necessitated the by-election,BJP national secretary Navjot Singh Sidhu said that that the wrong policies of Congress-led UPA government has turned India from a “Sone ki Chidiya (golden bird)” to “Sonia Ki Chidiya (Sonia’s bird)”.

The Lok Sabha MP from Amritsar, who canvassed the area with state BJP president Ashwani Sharma and Rajya Sabha MP Avinash Rai Khanna, said that during Atal Bihari Vajpayee-led NDA regime at the Centre,“the prices of LPG increased by only Rs 100,and which has now increased five times.”

He said that the UPA government, under the leadership of Manmohan Singh, has snatched away food from the common man.

Sidhu said that the Congress’s hand is like a slap on the face of common man. “Even during wars, the inflation never went beyond 7 per cent mark, but it is now pegged at 22 per cent. India is the only country where maximum tax is being collected on petrol, due to which it is becoming an out-of-reach commodity for the common man,” he added.
