Enact law like Right to Service: Sukhbir to Centre
Patiala: Shiromani Akali Dal president Sukhbir Badal on Thursday called upon the Congress-led UPA government to follow the footsteps of the Punjab government and enact a law like the Right to Service Act to curb corruption. Addressing rallies at Bhadaur,Barnala and Mehalkalan,Sukhbir said the SAD-BJP government had already implemented steps to check the reasons which lead to corruption and the same had been suggested by Anna Hazare through his demand for a citizens charter. He added that the relationship between a citizen and the state was all set to change in Punjab with the implementation of the Right to Services Act,which aims at empowering an ordinary citizen. The Act covers 67 services in both civil and police administrations.
Amritsar set to host CIIs trade expo
Amritsar: Confederation of Indian Industries (CII) will organise an international trade expo,titled Destination Punjab,to promote the state as a brand,in Amritsar from October 7 to 10. Deputy Commissioner Rajat Aggarwal and CII officials Kamna Aggarwala and Suneet Kochhar,said the aim of the expo is to provide platform for interaction with business leaders and forge partnerships to bring investments and entrepreneurship opportunities in state. The expo will focus on key sectors including farm equipment and machinery,textile and textile machinery,engineering goods,auto and machine tools ,leather and sports goods and tourist and hospitality. Aggarwala said Punjab has huge potential for growth,but it needs to be properly branded.
Experts hail decision to set up 9 distilleries
Amritsar: The sugar industry has welcomed the decision of the state government to establish 19 grain-based distilleries in Punjab. Dr RSS Kaler,head of department of food science and technology at GNDU and another expert,Harkamaljit Singh said the government can generate crores in revenue in the form of excise duty on liquor. Singh said that the distilleries can also switch over to molasses,a by product of sugar industry,in case of grain shortage. World over 80 per cent alcohol is produced economically from molasses, he added.
