After 63 years,marooned villages get a bridge to mainland

MAND (SULTANPUR LODHI): After 63 years of independence,the people of around 15 villages on an island in Beas river in Sultanpur Lodhi sub-division of Kapurthala district have got a road link to reach the mainland. A pontoon bridge has been built for the people of this neglected island who were dependent on a few creaky boats for movement up to now. About 10,000 people would benefit from this bridge. Although the bridge will be formally inaugurated later by finance minister Bibi Upinderjit Kaur,the villagers are elated as the bridge has been opened to them at an opportune time,when they are moving their wheat harvest to markets.

Panel to ascertain population of Vimukat Jatis for reservation in jobs

Chandigarh: The Punjab government has set up a one member commission headed by retired judge of Punjab and Haryana High Court,Justice Kiran Anand Lall,to ascertain the ratio of Vimukat Jatis for reservation in government jobs. This was disclosed by Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal in a meeting with a high powered delegation of Vimukat Jatis Front (Punjab) led by its President,Jathedar Labh Singh Devinagar,here today. Responding to the other demands raised by the delegation,Badal directed the Chief Secretary to issue instructions to all the Deputy Commissioners to include the word Vimukat Jati along with scheduled castes in the certificate being issued by the concerned authorities at different levels in the state. The CM also assured the members of the Vimukat Jatis that he would soon take up the matter with the Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh to seek his personal intervention to expedite the process to include all the 31 sub-castes of Sansi in the list of scheduled castes pertaining to Punjab.

Modern silos ready in Amritsar

AMRITSAR: Punjab’s first ultra-modern silos to store up to 50,000 MT of foodgrains in a scientific and safe manner have come up on the outskirts of the city. Developed by LT Food Limited,a private company,the silos have been set up at a cost of Rs 36 crore and are meant for bulk storage of wheat and rice,stated a company spokesperson. “Increasing wheat procurement over the last few years has added to the grain storage problem in Punjab. The production capacity of the state is 18 million tonnes,but storage is available for only 13 million tonnes. Hence,Punjab needed to create storage for 6 million tonnes,” said the spokesperson.

LPU murder accused in judicial custody

PHAGWARA: Three African students,including two Sudanese and one Tanzanian,of Lovely Professional University (LPU) who are accused of killing a Mizo student during a football match on Tuesday evening,were sent to judicial custody on Friday. Nine other African students who were arrested on Thursday as a preventive measure were,however,released after Sudanese embassy officials visited Phagwara on Friday and approached local authorities along with a Supreme Court lawyer. It is learnt that these nine students had gone on hunger strike inside the jail,prompting a letter from the police to the SDM to handle the situation. Sudanese embassy officials said the youths would be taken to Delhi and produced before the SDM’s court on May 10.
