Punjab govt sets up NRI cell
Chandigarh:
Conscious of the problems being faced by the Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) and addressing their issues and grievances on priority,Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal on Tuesday set up an NRI cell in his office under the chairmanship of Principal Secretary to Chief Minister,Darbara Singh Guru,with other members including Financial Commissioner Revenue or his secretary-level representative and Director General Police or his representative. A government spokesman said this cell has been set up by the CM with a view to quickly respond to the problems being faced by NRIs. DS Mangat,OSD to Principal Secretary (Chief Minister) will be the Member Secretary of this cell and he can be reached at the number 9417079777 or email ID cm@punjabmail.gov.in .

Probe begins into MNREGA complaint
Jalandhar:
Additional Deputy Commissioner (Development),Jalandhar,Sarojini Gautam Sharda recorded the statement of District Youth Congress (Rural) president Vikramjit Singh Chaudhary on Tuesday in connection with the alleged irregularities in the implementation of Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MNREGA). The statement was recorded in front of Jagdish Kumar,the national-level MNREGA monitor appointed by the Ministry of Union Development. The ministry has ordered an inquiry into the complaint of irregularities lodged by Chaudhary in August last year. He said field visits would be conducted from Wednesday.

SDM’s official Gypsy among 6 vehicles stolen
Amritsar:
Car thieves on the prowl stole six vehicles in the city on Tuesday. One of these six was the official Gypsy of Sub-Divisional Magistrate-II Paramjit Singh. The car was parked outside his residence and was found stolen during the day. The police said they were making all-out efforts to find the VIP vehicle.

NRI Ajmer Singh Nahal,a 37-year-old businessman from Gurdaspur,has been appointed Planning Commissioner of Hanford City in California,USA. Close friend Sarbjit Singh,Assistant Professor,Department of Industrial Training,BR Ambedkar National Institute of Technology in Jalandhar,said Nahal migrated to the US in 1992 along with his family at the age of 19 and was a successful businessman and a farmer in California.

Encourage Lohri for girl child: Harsimrat
Bathinda:
Member of Parliament from Bathinda and Nanhi Chhaan movement patron Harsimrat Badal has appealed to the people to encourage Lohri for the newborn girl child to bring attitudinal change in the society. In a press statement issued on Tuesday,she said the Nanhi Chhan movement was the first step towards bringing awareness in the society regarding the growing problems of skewed sex ration and degradation of environment. Harsimrat distributed blankets and woollens among the children in a orphanage at Nathana.

NGO sees red over tree felling for Lohri
Amritsar:
The large-scale destruction of the green cover in the city,that,too,on the auspicious occasion of Lohri,has angered residents and local NGO ‘Mission Aagaz’ that works for environmental awareness. They said their team surveyed the city and found that the government’s own staff,including Municipal Corporation employees,had been on a spree to cut and prune trees on roadsides and those near government buildings. “This is unfortunate. The MC staff is showing no mercy,’’ said Deepak Babbar from Mission Aagaz. Deputy Commissioner KS Pannu said that he will look into the complaint.

Akalis claiming credit for power projects initiated by Cong: Capt
Chandigarh:
Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee president Capt Amarinder Singh claimed on Tuesday that the Akali-BJP government was taking credit for initiating power projects of Goindwal Sahib,Talwandi Sabo and Rajpura,which were conceived and approved in principle by his government in September 2006. “The Akali-BJP government is making a false and baseless assertion about having launched these power projects in the state. These were in fact initiated during the previous Congress regime led by me,” Singh said in a press statement. He also ridiculed the government’s claims about making Punjab power surplus by next year,saying the Akalis had been saying this for the last four years but had not generated a single extra unit of power during the time.

Cops find complainant killed his brother
Patiala:
The Sangrur police have found out that a complainant himself was the killer of his brother,but had charged some others,whom he had cheated of some money on the pretext of sending them abroad,with the murder. Sangrur SSP Harcharan Singh Bhullar said the accused Satinder Kumar had lodged an FIR on May 22 last year in Police Station City Dhuri against Devinder Singh,Jasvir Kaur and Pal Kaur. He had stated in his complaint before the police that the three persons had compelled his brother Raj Kumar to commit suicide. During investigations,the enquiry officer found that Devinder and the others were innocent,while it was also revealed that Satinder Kumar had instead cheated Devinder Singh and the others.
