Punjab seeks Rs 350 crore to clean nullah

Chandigarh:The Punjab government has sought Rs 350 crore from the Centre for de-silting,relining and rehabilitation of the 152 km long Sakki Nullah,that runs from Amritsar to Gurdaspur. Chief Parliamentary Secretary (Irrigation) Sohan Singh Thandal said the state government has urged the Centre to approve the project and release the grants so that work can be initiated on the nullah.

Jawan dies after explosion at barracks

Kapurthala:The army has marked a court of inquiry after an explosion at the barracks in Kapurthala killed a jawan of the 8 Grenadier unit and injured two others on Sunday. The cause of low intensity explosion is yet to be ascertained. The deceased has been identified as Sepoy Sandeep of Bhiwani in Haryana,while the injured,Sepoy Deepak of Rajasthan and Lance Naik Baldev of Uttar Pradesh,are out of danger. The incident reportedly occurred when the jawans were cleaning their barracks on Sunday morning.

Guv bats for quality education to girls

Muktsar Sahib:Punjab Governor Shivraj V Patil today said that educated girls could play a proactive role in shaping the destiny of the nation by contributing in its socio-economic and political development. Accompanied by Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal and Lok Sabha MP Harsimrat Kaur Badal during his visit to the Dashmesh College of Girls at Badal village in the district,the Governor during his address laid thrust on all-round development of the girls. “Girls due to their determination and sincerity have made inroads in almost all the fields which were once considered to be the bastion of the male identity,” he said.
