Majithia asks UPA to prove majority
Amritsar:Punjab cabinet minister Bikram Singh Majithia on Wednesday urged President Pranab Mukherjee to call an immediate session of Parliament asking the UPA to prove its majority. Congress actually is in minority and the fact will come to fore during such a session of Parliament, Majithia said,while talking to the media at Ramdiwali Hinduan village. The party which has lost the confidence of the people and even its own allies has no right to stay in power, he added. The senior leader said: In a democratic set up,the decisions that affect the masses directly should be taken after evolving a consensus on the same by calling all party meet but the dictatorial attitude of Congress is self evident by its stance towards FDI,rationing of LPG and hike in diesel prices.
Barapind sent in judicial custody
Jalandhar:SGPC member and SAD Panch Pardhani chief Kulbir Singh Barapind was sent in judicial custody by a local court on Wednesday. Jalandhar (rural) police had requested extension of his police remand,but the court refused and sent him in judicial custody to the Ludhiana jail till October 10. His counsel Kashmir Singh Malhi filed an application seeking Barapinds medical examination,as the latter had alleged that he was given electric shock. Judge Jatinderpal Singh Bhatti has reserved the matter for Thursday. Barapind was booked under the Explosives Act,though the police could not recover any explosives from him.
20 new cases of Scrub Typhus reported
Shimla:Twenty fresh cases of mite-borne infectious disease – Scrub Typhus – was reported from Indira Gandhi Medical College (IGMC),Shimla,on Wednesday. Fifteen people in the state have died of the disease and 204 have tested positive,in the past one month. Ramesh Chand,Deputy Medical Superintendent of IGMC,said all the cases were reported from Solan and Shimla. Rajesh Guleria,a surveillance officer,said at the block level,doctors were directed to give doxycycline to patients suffering from high fever.
Pensioners to oppose BJP in Assembly polls
Shimla:Pensions Welfare Association,Himachal Pradesh,held a meeting of its state office bearers,action committee,executive body and core committee on Wednesday. A call to oppose the BJP in the upcoming Assembly elections for failing to address the issue of pensioners was given. Secretary General Hari Chand Gupta said their demands included enhancement of medical reimbursement from Rs 100 to Rs 500 per month and revision of family pensions for those who retired before 2006.
IIT-Mandi students shift to new campus
Shimla:About 110 students of the IIT-Mandi has shifted to the new hostels on the Kamand campus,built to shift the institute from its temporary campus in Mandi town. An inaugural function of the disk-shaped dining hall was held last week. It was a proud moment for IIT-Mandi,as it is the first among the new IITs to have academic and residential facilities on the main campus, said an official release.
