CHANDIGARH: Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee president Amarinder Singh,on Tuesday,said elections in Punjab might be advanced and could be held in December. While addressing senior party leaders and workers from different parts of the state here,the PCC president said the Congress was prepared for the polls but urged his party members not to be complacent.

Punjab CM writes to Jairam over BPL survey

CHANDIGARH: Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal,on Tuesday,urged Union Rural Development Minister Jairam Ramesh to allow the state to conduct its Below Poverty Line (BPL) survey from August 15 as Assembly elections were due in January or February 2012. In a letter,Badal said it would be difficult to conduct the survey that has been scheduled for November as it will be two months prior to the polls.

Institution of Engineers gets new chief

SHIMLA: Sunil Grover,Superintending Engineer (Planning and Monitoring ) in the Himachal Pradesh Electricity Board has been elected unopposed as chairman of the state centre of the Institution of Engineers (India) in Himachal Pradesh. He will have a two year tenure.Beside Grover,Dinesh Kashyap,executive engineer (design) in HIMUDA has been elected as honorary secretary of the centre here.

Daughter booked for killing father

HOSHIARPUR: Hoshiarpur police booked a woman for allegedly killing her father. Jarnail Singh,in his late 50s,was found dead at his residence in Ajnoha village on Monday. His eldest daughter Jaswinder Kaur,in her police complaint,has alleged that her sister Davinder Kaur,along with her friend Shyam,had killed her father. She said Davinder,who was married in Daroli Kalan and had a marital dispute with her husband,had been living with her father. Jaswinder alleged that recently Davinder had left the house and started living with Shyam,to which her father had objected.

No arrest yet in attack on cops at Beas

AMRITSAR: The police have failed to make a breakthrough in the daring attack on a police party by local goons at Beas two days back. The head constable,who was shot when a group of men attempted to free an accused from police custody,is serious in a local hospital. The police had booked 12 persons including an Akali leader,Yuvraj Singh,a resident of Madh village and a BJP politician Kanwaljit Singh,a resident of Bhalai Pur village on Monday. “We are looking for the accused and they will be arrested soon”,said Harjit Singh Brar,SP (Operations)Amritsar (Rural)
