Bathinda worst in sex-ratio,refinery to be blamed

When it comes to female foeticide,it is the child sex ratio that matters

When it comes to female foeticide,it is the child sex ratio that matters. The provisonal data of Census 2011 show the land of Nanhi Chaan — “Save the girl child” movement, which was launched by Bathinda MP Harsimrat Badal — has the worst number in overall sex-ratio.

The total number of females in Bathinda is 865,the lowest in the state. However, its child sex-ratio is 854,better than the state average of 846.

Punjab Chief Secretary S C Aggarwal attributed the phenomenon to the 25,000 odd males working at Laxmi Mittal’s Bhatinda Refinery. “They have been working at the refinery for more than six months and were counted in the census. If you take that number out,Bathinda’s overall sex ratio is at par with other districts,” he said. But Bathinda also cuts a sorry figure in female literacy. Its overall literacy rate is among the lowest at 69.6 per cent and female literacy is worse still at 62.9 per cent.
