The District Bar Association and advocates of the sessions court boycotted work in the Court of Judicial Magistrate Jyoti Birbian for the second consecutive day on Saturday. Termed her style of functioning as arbitrary, the Association alleged the magistrate had misbehaved with employees and advocates.
On Friday,a group of lawyers came to us and complained about the judicial officer. She had allegedly spoken rudely with one of them. We immediately held a general house meeting and decided to suspend work, said Jagpal Singh, president of the Association.
He alleged that the advocates had also complained of arbitrary functioning of the magistrate.
A few of them have alleged that the orders pronounced by her in a case and the written judgement have differed on a few occasions, he said.
The matter was taken up with a senior judge a month ago,but no action has yet been taken, said the Association, adding that it would now approach the High Court. Singh said they would submit documentary evidence against the magistrate and seek either her termination or transfer from the court. Till then, the Association is likely to boycott court.
The litigants, meanwhile, were a harried lot on Saturday as no advocate appeared for any of the cases lined up for hearing.
