Day One of the two-day OYA Autocross and Motorcross 2009 event saw some heavy duty action as participants burnt rubber on the track and created huge clouds of dust as they negotiated hairpin turns and top gear chase for the qualifying rounds of the event at the Dussehra Ground in Phase VII,Mohali.

The qualifying rounds will continue Saturday morning, and thereafter the finals will be held. The sports event has been organised by Old Yadavindrians Association (OYA). “This is the first time that an event of this magnitude would be held in the history of motor sports in Chandigarh . The catch in this event is that not only former Yadavindrians but anybody can come and participate in this event,” says Rahul Malhotra president OYA. Add Malvinder Singh and Dr. J.S. Teja, former presidents of OYA,”This will henceforth become the annual feature in the OYA Calendar and would be organised by Team Chandigarh Adventure Sports.”

Champion rallyist Sunny Sidhu, who is associated with the organising committee of the event, said participants are divided into the following categories: four-wheel drive,800-1100 CC,1100-1600 CC,SUVs and an open category in which a person driving any vehicle can participate. There will be 12 participants in each category. “The overall winner will be the fastest person on the track. Prizes will also be given category-wise,” he added.

Events like these, said Sunny, offer a good look at the actual driving skills of a person. “In cross-country marathon events, participants are seen only for a couple of minutes, and then they speed by on the road. So there, any participant can say that he was doing great and lost out on account of a problem. In events like Autocross, the driving skills of a driver are for all to see. So everybody knows how a participant performs,” he highlighted.

The prize distribution function will be held tomorrow. The event will wrap up with OYA-Xtravaganza,the annual winter ball of the association at CGA Lawns,Chandigarh . The event was last held at Chandigarh in 2005.
