Art on Track

If the commuters who hurry through Delhi’s Nizamuddin Railway Station wheeling their luggage had a chance to look up,they’d notice a new artwork on the walls — an installation showing a train and railway signals. Titled Journey, this is Delhi-based artist Naresh Kapuria’s “joint-venture” with Ashwani Lohani,Divisional Railway Manager,Northern Railways. The installation shows 14 compartments, with people sitting at each window, and nine signals painted red, green, black and golden.

“Trains are like a medium where we meet new people. It gets strangers to talk to each other and they sit together irrespective of religion or caste. Hence, for me a train is a journey of life,” says Kapuria, who took a year to create this installation, which was inaugurated on Sunday.

His other work,Chai Garam, can be seen at the New Delhi Railway Station. It shows a bicycle laden with colourful kettles and glasses filled with tea.
