55-year-old dies in road mishap

A 55-year-old man,Fakir Chand,was crushed to death by an unidentified vehicle driven in a rash and negligent manner on Tuesday night. The mishap took place at around 11:30 pm at the Sector 39/40/55/56 roundabout when he was driving a moped (CH01 T 6194) and was returning home. According to police,he was hit by a rashly driven vehicle which fled from the spot. There were no eyewitnesses to the accident,making it a blind hit and run case. A passer-by informed the police control room and a PCR vehicle rushed the victim to the PGI,where he was declared brought dead. He used to run a show-making shop,said the police. A case of causing death due to negligence under section 304 A of the IPC has been registered by the Sector 39 police station. The younger brother of the deceased is serving as assistant sub-inspector with the Intelligence Bureau (IB). Fakir Chand is survived by his wife and three children.

Boy missing from Snehalaya

A boy namely ‘Suraj’ aged about 10 to 11 years years,who is an inmate of Snehalaya,has been missing since Tuesday night. His height is 3’-6” ft,he has a wheatish complexion,round face,short hair,flat and broad nose and dark brown eyes. He was wearing a blue sweater and chocolate colour trouser when he was last seen . A case has been registered in this regard with the Sector 39 Police Station,Chandigarh. President’s police medal awardee’s body donated

Presidents police medal awardee and former army officer Col Barkat Singh Bal’s body was donated to PGIMER for research purposes. The Department of Anatomy of PGIMER,Chandigarh,received the body of Col Bal,Ex 20th Lancers (Army) who later joined the Central Reserve Police Force(CRPF). “The department is grateful to the family and admires him for this noble gesture,” said the head of the PGIMER department of Anatomy.

‘Lift ban on NOC for GPA holders’

The Chandigarh Social Welfare Council has submitted a representation to Union Home Minister P Chidambaram,demanding succour for holders of the instrument of general power of attorney. It also wants the Administration to be prevailed on to lift the present ban on issuance of NOCs. The representation states that Chandigarh is starved of space and the realty sector has been its worst victim. The Administration has twisted rules when it comes to sale of property. The Administration has vide its notification banned the issuance of NOC to holders of instrument of General Power of Attorney of the property. The Council has demanded that the ban should be lifted.

Blood donation camp held

As many as 156 volunteers donated blood at the annual blood donation camp organised by State Bank of India (SBI),Medical Institute Branch,Chandigarh,in association with the NSS of DAV College,Sector 10. SBI Chief General Manager (Local Head Office,Chandigarh) S K Sehgal inaugurated the camp. Among the donors were students,NSS volunteers,DAV College staff members and SBI Medical Institute branch employees. Regional Manager T K Berry,DAV College Principal B C Josan and DAV School Regional Director Vijay Kumar Sharma motivated the students for the cause.
