Second dengue death in Mohali

Mohali: Another dengue death was reported in Mohali on Sunday and this was the second death due to dreaded dengue fever here in the past 24 hours. A businessman of Patiala,RS Waraich,52,died at Fortis Hospital here at 9.45 am this morning,an official spokesperson confirmed. “The patient had arrived at Fortis at 7.30 pm on Friday in a very critical condition with multi organ failure,renal failure and severe metabolic acedosis. He also had liver failure and severe thrombocytopenia (very low platelets) and shock (low blood pressure),” divulged the Fortis spokesperson,while confirming that he was dengue antigen positive patient.

On Friday night,a resident of Sector 79 (Sohana) here,Pardeep Singh,had reportedly died due to dengue fever at PGI.

Besides two dengue deaths,Mohali had already reported two H1N1 deaths during this season so far. While the official figures have confirmed as many as 296 dengue cases tested positive at local Civil Hospital ,a large number of H1N1 and dengue patients have also reported at various private hospitals here so far.

Four arrested on charges of theft

Chandigarh: The police today arrested four youths,including two minors,and recovered four two-wheelers used for snatching.

The police arrested 21-year-old Johnny and 20-year-old Ashok Kumar after laying a barrier at Sector 42 while both the minors were arrested from Sector 35. Johnny and Ashok were produced in the court and have been remanded to two-day police custody while both the minors have been sent to the Sector 25 Juvenile Home.

SHO Sector 36 Inspector Anokh Singh said that barriers were laid on a tip-off and they apprehended the accused. Four stolen motorcycles were recovered from their possession. They used the vehicles for snatching with fake registration numbers.

Anokh Singh further said that Johnny and Ashok have been booked for various offences in past. They were released from jail around 20 days back and formed a gang with the other two accused.

Sarao is new Sirhind Rotary president

Patiala: Paramjeet Singh Sarao,IPS,was formally installed as the President of Rotary Club,Sirhind,R.I. District 3090 for 2010-11. Didar Singh Bhatti,MLA,Sirhind was the chief guest.

Lauding Rotary International for their services to mankind,especially the down trodden and the under privileged,Bhatti called upon the Rotarians to live up to the spirit of “Service above self”. He also congratulated Sarao on assuming the Presidentship of Rotary Club,Sirhind. He also appreciated the efforts of the Club in the field of blood donation and other humanitarian projects.

Punjabi University bags overall trophy at zonal youth festival

Patiala: The Punjabi University campus bagged the overall trophy in the three-day Zonal Youth Festival which concluded at the Jasdev Singh Sandhu College of Education,here today. The dhol beats of Bhangra and the joy and enthusiasm of the audience was witness to the concluding ceremony of the Festival. The Khalsa College was the runners up in the overall trophy,while Government College for Girls Patiala stood third.

The Chief Guest Manjit Singh Narang,Commissioner,Municipal Corporation,said Punjab was the land of festivals and such youth festivals were like light houses for today’s youth. He added that these participants bring forth our age old tradition and culture through their performances.

Office-bearers of Chandigarh Business Council elected

Chandigarh: Chandigarh Business Council announced the names of members of the executive body. Neeraj Bajaj has been named the chairman. Kamaljit Singh Panchhi would be the senior vice-president. Subhash Sethi,Sat Paul Bansal,B M Kohli and Harbinder Singh Gujral would be the advisors. Sat Paul Garg,Arwinder Paul Singh,Sanjay Dahuja,Arun Talwar and Baldev Aggarwal would be the vice-presidents. While L C Arora,Baldev Goyal and J P S Kalra would be the general secretaries.
