The Department of Local Government,Punjab,has issued a show-cause notice to Ropar Municipal Council president Amarjit Singh Satyal.

Show-cause notice to Ropar MC chief for ‘misusing powers’
Ropar:
The Department of Local Government,Punjab,has issued a show-cause notice to Ropar Municipal Council president Amarjit Singh Satyal who is accused of misusing his powers and official position by building a house on the land allotted for a nursing home in Giani Zail Singh Nagar locality here. The show-cause notice was issued by Secretary,Local Government,S S Rajput under the Punjab Municipal Act 1911,following an inquiry conducted by the vigilance wing of the department. According to the inquiry report,the Ropar Improvement Trust had allotted the site of dispensary/nursing home to Satyal through an open auction on June 28,2006. Satyal has been asked to submit his reply within 21 days.

Mukesh Bassi is new BJP spokesperson
Chandigarh:
Bharatiya Janata Party president Sanjay Tandon appointed Mukesh Bassi,vice-president of the party’s city unit,as its new spokesperson. Bassi,an industrialist,has been actively working for the party for many years now. He has also held the post of Amateur Karate Association president as well as that of the Chandigarh Cricket Association.

Two run over by trains
Ambala:
Two men lost their lives after they were run over by trains in two separate incidents on Friday. While one of the deceased is Ravinder Kumar,a resident of Sonia Colony,who was run over near the Ambala railway station,the other is yet to be unidentified. The elderly man died while crossing the track at Ghel village near here. The Government Railway Police have registered two cases.

Honour for former PGI surgery head
Chandigarh:
Dr S M Bose,former head of surgery at PGI,was honoured with Prof S S Anand Oration Award during the 70th National Conference of Association of Surgeons of India being held in AIIMS,New Delhi. The conference is being attended by more than 6,000 surgeons from all over India and abroad. Bose delivered the endowment lecture in memory of his teacher and trainer Prof Anand,the founder director of PGI,Chandigarh.

Prize distribution at Shivalik,Sector 41
Chandigarh:
The senior wing of Shivalik Public School,Sector 41,celebrated its annual prize distribution and cultural programme on Friday. Principal Gurkiran Nalwa read out the annual report and students presented a variety of cultural items. ‘Ek Naya Aagaz’,a song incorporating the latest methodology of assessment by the CBSE was appreciated. School director D S Bedi also addressed the gathering,while Punjab School Education Board Chairman Dr Dalbir Singh Dhillon,the chief guest,gave away prizes to students for academic and co¿curricular activities.

Two-day CA conclave begins today
Chandigarh:
To give an overview and deliberate on the new concepts,the Chandigarh Branch of Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) will organise a two-day CA Conclave on December 18 and 19 here. The conference will be inaugurated by B S Dhillon,Chief Commissioner of Income Tax,North-West Region,and attended by a large number of officials from the income tax department and chartered accountants from Punjab,Haryana,Himachal Pradesh,Delhi and a few other states.

Seminar on education in Canada
Chandigarh:
An international seminar on ‘Opportunities of Studying In Canada’ was organised at two schools in Chandigarh — St Xavier’s School and Ajit Karam Singh International Public School. The key resource persons were John Gregory,senior marketing manager from Fraser International College,Vancouver; Geetanjali Sharma,marketing manager,Navitas India; and K D Singh,general manager,Canamgroup.

Chemists’ conference begins tomorrow
Chandigarh:
Panjab University will organise the 29th Annual Conference of Indian Council of Chemists on December 19 and 21. More than 400 delegates from different parts of the country are expected to participate in the deliberations. The conference is being organised to provide a platform to scientists,academicians,subject experts and students to discuss recent developments in the field of chemical sciences.

Gita Jayanti at Patiala school
Patiala:
The DAV Public School,Bhupindra Road,Patiala,organised the annual Gita Jayanti celebrations here on Friday. Papers touching different aspects of Gita were presented on the occasion. “The Bhagavad-Gita was a source of inspiration in our freedom struggle,” said school principal S R Prabhakar.

Kalashree award for NZCC director
Patiala:
Art lovers and theatre activists of Patiala and Chandigarh and artistes of the National Theatre Arts Society (NTAS),Patiala,honoured North Zone Cultural Centre director D S Saroya in Chandigarh on Friday. NTAS director Pran Sabharwal said the society’s prestigious Kalashree Award carrying a memento,a shawl and bouquets was conferred on Saroya in recognition of his outstanding contribution towards enriching the performing and visual arts in north India.

New citizens’ association chief
Chandigarh:
Surinder Verma was unanimously elected president of the Citizens Association for Relief Education and Service on Friday. In a meeting at DSOI,Sector 36,S K Mago was elected vice-president,Col M G S Khurana as secretary,V M Malhotra as joint secretary and R L Kanodia as finance secretary.
