Panchkula lawyers to boycott judicial magistrate court for one more week
PANCHKULA: The work would remain suspended in the court of judicial magistrate Jyoti Birbian as the Bar association has decided to boycott the judicial officer for one more week. This was decided in the general house meeting held of the association held today. The association has already submitted a complaint to High Court judge SS Saron in this regard.
The association has sought either transfer or termination of the officer citing reasons such as arbitrary functioning and impolite behaviour of the officer. Complaints had already been pouring in with the association about the alleged rude behaviour of the magistrate for the past few months and the same was brought to the notice of senior officials. We would continue with our agitation till the matter is investigated thoroughly and action is taken against the magistrate. We know that the litigants are suffering but this is serious matter, said Jagpal Singh. He added that Birbians court would be boycotted for the entire week.
Rayat-Bahra group starts evening engineering classes
MOHALI: Rayat-Bahra Group of Institutes has started evening classes in various disciplines of engineering realizing the need of creating new engineers and with an aim to utilize its rich infrastructure to fullest.
Disclosing this,group chairman Gurvinder Singh Bahra said,As per the Union Ministry of Higher Education,at least 30 per cent of our children should be studying after 10+2 by 2025,a figure that stands at just 12 per cent presently. Evening college is an initiative to provide learning opportunities to those who are into jobs and have no time to attend regular morning colleges, he said.
The first in region to get permission from All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) to start these evening classes in engineering courses,the group has also employed teachers especially for the evening sessions,Bahra said,informing that AICTE has approved 60 seats each on B Tech in mechanical engineering and computer sciences for the evening session.
He added that at the same time,the group has started new technical courses at Rayat-Bahra Biotechnology Center of Excellence this academic session. M Tech courses in mechanical engineering and computer engineering have been sanctioned 18 seats each. At the co-educational institute,30 seats have also been increased in mechanical engineering.
SBoP donates Rs 2 lakh for environmental park in Patiala
PATIALA: The State Bank of Patiala,Head Office,Patiala today donated Rs two lakh under its Community Banking Scheme for the establishment of one Environmental Park on the premises of Government Rajindra Hospital in Patiala. Besides,a number of sheds have been errected with chairs/ benches beneath it and fountains have also been installed. Punjabs Minister for Medical Education and Research Tikshan Sood inaugrated the park.
PU launches Masters in instrumentation programme
CHANDIGARH: To provide technical education and training to the students so that they can serve the industry and involve themselves in various research activities,the Department of University Centre for Instrumentation and Microelectronics (UCIM),Panjab University,started a new course in M Sc (Instrumentation).
The application form for this course can be downloaded from the PU website-www.puchd.ac.in free of cost. However,those finally admitted will be charged Rs 40 as cost of admission form along with the admission fee. The last date for receipt of applications is August 16 and date of counselling on August 17 at 10 am in the committee room of the UCIM Department,Panjab University,Chandigarh.
The government is encouraging and supporting activities in the field of instrumentation. Presently,the Department is running a M Tech (Instrumentation) course. The M Sc (instrumentation) course has to its advantage the support of government organizations in the form of MoU with the Department.
Second counselling for MA economics
CHANDIGARH: All the candidates on the waiting list for admission to BA (Honours School) Economics and MA (Economics) can appear for the second counselling (in the case of BA Honours School on August 6 at 11.30 am) and (in the case of MA (Economics) on August 10,2010 at 11.30 am) and third counselling on August 23 at 11.30 am.
Two booked for fake advertisements
Chandigarh: In a bid to divert the attention of a High Court advocate who was fighting a case against them,two persons reportedly came up with fake advertisements in a newspaper in the advocates name. The duo Anil,resident of Ram Darbar,and Gagan,resident of Manimajara were booked on Wednesday.
On a complaint filed by advocate B K Jindal,Anil was arrested while Gagan is still at large. According to the police,both the accused gave fake advertisements in a local newspaper stating that the advocate wanted to hire a peon for his office,while the other was for the sale of a Hyundai Santro car. On learning of the advertisement,people poured at Jindals residence for peon interviews or to see the car.
This was a planned move of Gagan to divert Jindals attention,who is fighting a case against him,said a police officer,adding that Gagans wife had committed suicide and Jindal was hired by the deceased family to fight the case.
MCM DAV holds workshop on AIDS
CHANDIGARH: The Department of Sociology of MCM DAV College for Women,Chandigarh,organised a workshop-cum-seminar on HIV AIDS in collaboration with AISEC International. The event was organized to sensitize students about the global menace of HIV AIDS and the urgent need of fighting against this fatal disease by spreading awareness among in the society.
Students were educated about the disease and its spread and were encouraged to associate with group and organizations working to curb this virus. A play was presented by foreign delegates from AISEC to inform students about the lifestyle changes that the battle against AIDS demands. It was also designed to develop empathy in students towards patients suffering from this disease. With delegates from countries like Russia,China,Canada and Hong Kong apprising the students about the disease and its related social facets,the event offered the students a peek into the global threat caused by the disease. The Principal of the college,Dr. Puneet Bedi appreciated the efforts made by the college to face the disease as a global challenge. Dr. Bedi said that this fatal disease has become global in its menace and demands a similar response for eradication. She emphasized that MCM is ever-willing to develop international linkages to fight such threats.
PU V-C to release sports journal
CHANDIGARH: Prof R C Sobti,Vice-Chancellor,Panjab University,will release the first issue of Indias first Bio-annual International Journal of Sports Sciences and Physical Education on August 6. The venue of release is office of the Vice-Chancellor,PU. It the first International Journal from India to be assigned International Standard Serial Number.
Health dept raids drug store
Ambala: Drugs and medicines being marketed illegally by a drug dealers were seized during a raid conducted by the Haryana State Drug Controller in Ambala Cantonment today. The raid was conducted by a team from Chandigarh headed by Drug Controller Parjinder Singh. During the raid,the team found that the owner of Prince Medicine Centre was trading in intoxicants and other drugs used for illegal purposes for the last three months. The sale ran into lakhs of rupees. The team took 7 cartons into its possession. The shop has been sealed.
Couple batters man to death
Ambala: A contractor,Baij Nath,was beaten to death by a couple near Sector-8 HUDA Colony on Wednesday. According to eyewitnesses,Bhut Nath with his wife attacked Baij Nath while he was having tea at a shop near new Anaj Mandi in Ambala City. Suddenly,they attacked Baij Nath and continued beating him till he fell unconscious. However,on receiving information,the police reached the spot where Baij Nath had succumbed to injuries. It is learnt that old enmity between both the parties was the cause of dispute.
UT seeks list to select new finance secy
Chandigarh: UT Administration has sought a list of officers from the Punjab government to be considered as a replacement of Finance Secretary Sanjay Kumar,whose term ends in December. A Punjab cadre officer of the 1988 batch,Kumar had taken charge on January 10,2008. During his stint in the city,he held charge of 14 departments,including agriculture,environment,housing,urban planning and development,excise and taxation,forest and wildlife and engineering,among others. His first deputation in Chandigarh was from 1996-98. Of the panel of names the Punjab government would send,the selection of the officer would be made by Punjab Governor and UT Administrator Shivraj Patil. The name would thereafter be approved by the Central government.
8-year-old dies of snake bite
MOHALI: An 8-year-old girl,Raj Kumari,died after being bitten by a snake on Wednesday evening. Daughter of a migrant couple Babu Ram and Saroj Rani,staying as caretaker at a house in Sector 79 here,she was bitten by a snake on one of her hands. Following this,she was rushed to a private hospital in Sohana,from where she was referred to GMCH-32 in Chandigarh,where she died.
Workshop for PTU B-school faculty
MOHALI: A three-day faculty development programme began at the Centre for Management Training and Research (CMTR) at its Kharar campus to orient the faculty of management colleges affiliated to Punjab Technical University (PTU). The workshop was conducted by Dr Omprakash K Gupta,a professor from University of Houston USA,who besides teaching in several American universities has earlier been a faculty at IIM Ahmdabad and was the founder director of Nirma Institute of Management. The programme was inaugurated by Dr Rajneesh Arora,Vice Chancellor,PTU,and over 40 management teachers from various PTU-affiliated colleges were attending it. Dr Gupta,who has conducted similar programmes in India and abroad,said the workshop would focus on case-method of teaching which was the backbone of management education all over the world and originated with the formal education in business at Harvard a hundred years back. Today,he added,every B-School of importance relies heavily on the case-method of learning.Vipin Dewan,Director,CMTR,said the participants will learn the newer teaching skills and techniques by practically discussing various business case studies.
