Ambala: More than 15 people are learnt to be down with diarrhoea in Sultanpur village and two in Ambala Cantonment. The residents of Sultanpur alleged that they had not been getting clean drinking water for the last few days and were compelled to consume contaminated water. Authorities at the Ambala Civil Hospital said an alert had been sounded to take necessary measure to control the spread of diarrhoea. Chief Medical Officer (Ambala) Satish Aggarwal said tablets of Halogen were distributed among the residents and they were being advised to drink boiled water. Meanwhile,the officials of the public health department,on directions from from Deputy Commissioner S P Srow,checked the water pipelines for signs of leakage.

Man sets himself on fire

CHANDIGARH: A resident of Sector 24,reportedly after a heated argument with his wife,tried to end his life by setting himself on fire. Police said the family of Bikramjit (30) managed to put out the fire and rushed him to the Government Multi-Specialty Hospital,Sector 16,where his condition was critical. Police have registered a case against Bikramjit for attempting to commit suicide.

UPA ‘soft’ on terrorists,says BJYM

CHANDIGARH: The Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha organised a protest demonstration on Sunday against the “soft approach” of the UPA government on terrorism. Speaking on the occasion,BJP state general secretary Satinder Singh and Colony Cell convener Dalip Sharma said the Congress government had always adopted lopsided policies against terrorism as a result of which the safety and integrity of the country had been put at stake. Satinder also accused the UPA government of making the Prevention of Terrorism Act (POTA) ineffective after coming to power in 2004,as a result of which the terrorist activities had increased.

One arrested for attack on college student

CHANDIGARH: The Chandigarh Police has arrested one of the accused involved in the attack on a college student last week. The other five accused are still at large. Police said Sandeep,a BA-III year student and resident of Mohali,was arrested from his village last night. On May 3,Arvinder Bajwa — a BA-III year student of Goswami Ganesh Dutta Sanatan Dharma College,Sector 32 — was injured when a group of boys entered the college premises and attacked him. The incident,the police said,was a fallout of rivalry between students’ groups that had emanated from the student elections held in September last year.

Man charged with impersonation

CHANDIGARH: The Chandigarh Police has registered a case against Jaspal Singh,a resident of Malout,for impersonation. Police said Singh was caught by the staff while appearing on behalf of one Charanjit Singh for the examination of inspector,conducted by the Punjab food and civil supplies department. The examination staff became doubtful as the photograph did not match with the original candidate. A case was registered in Sector-39 police station.

Drunk youth creates nuisance at hospital

Ambala: A youth from Himachal Pradesh,allegedly in an inebriated state,created a scene in the local civil hospital where he had gone for treatment,police said on Sunday. He alleged that a bag containing cash,certificates and other articles was misplaced in the hospital and accused the policemen,to whom he had complained about it,of taking it. Police said a case would be registered against him for drinking in the open and creating nuisance at a public place under the influence of liquor.
