Meat markets shut in Chandigarh to protest against MC order
Chandigarh: Meat markets remained closed in the city today in protest against the Municipal Corporations (MC) order that meat sellers would need to get birds slaughtered at the slaughter house and not in the markets. The meat market association held a rally too to protest against the MC decision. The members met senior Municipal Corporation officials to highlight their demands and convey their opposition to the order that the birds must be slaughtered only at the slaughter house. Association President Vijay Kumar pointed out that the cost of getting a bird slaughtered at the slaughter house is Rs 5.
We would have to wait for the birds to be slaughtered. The customers at times demand that birds be slaughtered in front of their eyes so that they are assured of fresh meat. The orders of the Municipal Corporation are not acceptable to us, said Kumar. According to the MC,the aim of getting birds slaughtered at the slaughterhouse is to assure residents that the meat is hygienic. However, the move does not seem to augur well with the meat sellers who did not supply meat anywhere in the city today.
