Mother-daughter booked for immigration fraud

A mother-daughter duo were among three residents of Mohali,who were booked for allegedly running an immigration racket,the police said here today. Sukhchain Singh of Badian village in Muktsar district,who is a head priest at a local gurdwara,complained to the local police that Sukhwinder Kaur and her daughter Sumit Kaur of Phase XI here had come in contact with him and told him that their relative Narinder Singh runs an immigration agency to send people abroad. “After they offered me to be sent abroad,I,along with six of my other friends,approached the trio,who took Rs 12 lakh from us for sending us to USA and later took Rs 4.25 lakh for the air tickets,” alleged Sukhchain,while further alleging that the accused asked them to reach Delhi airport on January 17 till 8 pm as their flight was scheduled at 3 am on January 18 but since January 17,their repeated efforts to contact the accused remained futile as they turned incommunicado. The police have booked the trio for cheating and criminal breach of trust under Section 420 and 406 of the IPC but no arrests were made as yet.

‘Security steps will not trouble anyone’

The Director of the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research,(PGIMER),Chandigarh Professor K K Talwar on Wednesday said that they will ensure that no inconvenience is caused to any individual during the upcoming convocation of the institute. “We will ensure that no one suffers due to the enhanced security on eve of the PGI convocation,” said Talwar while addressing a press conference ahead of the 31 convocation of the institute,scheduled to be held on Friday. Nepal President Dr Ram Baran Yadav will be the Chief Guest on the occasion and would deliver the convocation address. The Convocation will be presided over by the Minister of Health and Family Welfare,Ghulam Nabi Azad,who is also President of PGIMER. The Director Talwar said that the Institute President will be bestowing degrees on 330 students this year. “During this Convocation PhD will be awarded to 21 students,” Talwar said.

Medicines seized

The Drugs Control Officer,Chandigarh,Sunil Chaudhry on Wednesday seized allopathic medicines in Dhanas after it was found that the outlet was selling the medicine without any license. Chaudhry inspected the premises of M/s Papu Kiryana in Dhanas on the basis of a tip-off and found that the firm is involved in stocking and selling of allopathic drugs without possessing any valid retail and whole sale drug license. “ A huge quantity of allopathic drugs was seized from the proprietor of the store,which included 1,160 injections of Oxytocin,” an official spokesman said. The officials said that the shop owner failed to produce the purchase record of these drugs and also could not produce the drug license for stock/sale of allopathic drugs on the spot. The administration will issue a show cause notice will be issued to him.

First prize for Bhangra team at R-Day parade

A contingent of children trained by the North Zone Cultural Centre (NZCC) has won the first prize in the category of performances by schoolchildren in the Republic Day parade in New Delhi. More than 160 students from Paragon School,Mohali,and five government model senior secondary schools of Chandigarh had performed Bhangra. The trophy was presented at a function in Delhi on January 31. Minister of Defense A K Antony presented the trophy to NZCC director D S Saroya,who said it was for the first time in the last 25 years that a contingent of children trained by the NZCC had won first prize at the Republic Day function. S P Singh,the choreographer,said: “It was a rare opportunity and an experience which the children will remember all their lives.” The children will be felicitated at a special function where they will receive certificates and gifts from the Ministry of Defence. The Punjab governor and NZCC chairman will honour them in the next few days.

Loudspeakers banned in Mohali

In view of the ensuing annual exams and hardship caused to patients and elderly people,District Magistrate Parveen Kumar has imposed a ban on the use of loudspeakers across Mohali district after 10 pm and before 6 am with immediate effect. The prohibitory order was issued under Section 144 of the CrPC. To ensure implementation of the ban,SDM Amit Talwar held a meeting with the heads of religious,social organisations and prominent citizens on Wednesday to apprise them of the order and urge them to follow it in letter and spirit. He said flouting the ban would invite stern legal action.

Unchahar Express cancelled again

On the second day of resuming services after being suspended for more than a month,the Unchahar Express train running between Allahabad and Chandigarh was cancelled again on Tuesday. More than 500 passengers had to face the brunt when they were informed of this at the railway station. According to railway officials,the decision was due to cancellation of another train — Sadbhawna Express — running between Chandigarh and Lucknow,the rakes of which are used in Unchahar. Unchahar Express had been off track since December 23 due to bad weather.

Hawara kin allowed to meet him

A local court on Wednesday allowed the relatives of Jagtar Singh Hawara to meet him in police custody. Hawara and Paramjit Singh Bheora,accused in the infamous Burail jailbreak case and convicted for the assassination of former Punjab chief minister Beant Singh,were produced before the court in connection with resumed hearing of the jailbreak case. Accusing a Delhi Police officer of manhandling him,Advocate Arvind Thakur filed a complaint against Inspector Shamsher Singh and alleged that he attempted to violate the right of the counsel to meet the accused.
