Lawyers demand transfer of uncle judges
Chandigarh: Lawyers of Punjab and Haryana High Court Bar Association on Thursday passed a resolution demanding transfer of uncle judges. They also demanded that the transfer policy which began in 1993 should be revised. As per the said policy,one third of the judges of a High Court should be from a court outside the state. Advocates RS Bains,Rajiv Godara,SD Sharma spoke in favour of the resolution and strongly advocated the review of the 1993 policy.
Foreigners get lecture on waste management
Chandigarh: A team comprising delegates from various countries visited the garbage processing plant at Dadumajra for a lecture on solid waste management. The Energy and Resources Institute arranged the meet as a part of training for the 30 delegates from 20 developing countries.
Four arrested for gambling
Panchkula: Four persons were arrested for gambling in a raid conducted by the police. A team from the Sector 5 police station raided gate number 3 at Kharak Mangoli in old Panchkula. The accused have been identified as Sanjeev Kumar,Pammi Lal,Jai Kumar,and Manoj Kumar. A sum of Rs 1,010 was recovered from their possession.
NHAI returns HUDA proposal
Panchkula: With the Haryana Urban Development Agency (HUDA) failing to deposit the full amount needed for construction work,the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) has refused to construct additional flyovers on NH-22. The flyovers were to come up near HMT and at the Burjkotia intersection,so that residents of upcoming townships in these areas could have access to the national highway. HUDA has been developing sectors in HMT and Surajpur. Following the refusal,the NHAI has returned an advance of Rs 19 crore,which HUDA had deposited for construction work.
Internet helping small cities,towns earn
Chandigarh: Residents of Tier-II cities and small towns in Punjab are benefitting the most from an online survey portal,which pays participants for answering questionnaires on diverse market trends,said Vivek Gautam,Chief Marketing Officer of Speak Asia Online a Singapore-based portal that began operations in India in May 2010 and has about 2 lakh panelists. Our numbers stand at more than 20,000 in Punjab. We want to strengthen our presence further, he added. The company pays its panelists Rs 500 per online questionnaire and gives them about two questionnaires every week which takes one about 15 minutes each to answer. The company conducts surveys for organisations wanting to do market research.
PGI gets an LCD television
Chandigarh: Utkarsh Foundation for Education and Social Welfare arranged as a donation for a 32 LCD TV from Panasonic Brand Shop in Sector-35,for the emergency blocks waiting hall in PGIMER. The unit is a Chandigarh-based NGO.
Jewellery shop burgled
Mohali: A jewellery shop was burgled and the miscreants decamped with gold and silver ornaments worth lakhs of rupees in Nayagaon,said police on Thursday. The victim,Subhash Chander,runs a jewellery shop at Main Bazaar in Nayagaon. When he opened his shop in the morning,he found the locks broken and the shop rummaged. The police have lodged a case into the incident.

Two die in Ambala
Ambala: Two persons died and seven sustained injuries in separate incidents that took place in the district on Thursday. A labourer,Munna,died after falling from a electric tower while repairing a defect in Sector 10 of Ambala City. In another incident,a middle-aged person died after being run over by a bus at the general bus stand in Ambala Cantonment. Six persons were injured when a bus collided with a truck near Lucky Farm on Saharanpur Road. In another incident,a newlywed man committed suicide by hanging himself with a ceiling fan in the Lajwanti Nagar Ambala Cantonment.
