An awareness meeting on the medical aspect of alcoholism was held at Government College for Girls,Sector 42,on Friday as part of the ongoing programme organised by Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) and the UT Administration.

Dr Vineet Bhardwaj from the Department of Psychiatry,PGI,was the resource person on the occasion.

Members of Alcoholics Anonymous also shared experiences of how AA helped them overcome their compulsive drinking habit.

A woman narrated her plight when she discovered that her husband was a compulsive drinker and her family life was ruined.

Another young member of AA shared how he was shunned by his friends and family when he got addicted. What started as an urge to experiment owing to peer pressure led him to alcoholism and made him aggressive and anti-social. But the young man said he has overcome his problem and urged others to follow suit and give up alcohol.

Students were also apprised that alcoholism has been declared an illness by World Health Organisation and Indian Medical Association.

It was emphasised that alcoholics need to be treated with compassion, understanding and tolerance and directed to seek help from de-addiction centres and voluntary organisations. Students also pledged to lead an alcohol-free life.
