Protests against the authorities, requests for recounting, ‘unexpected’ poll results, victory rallies across the city in jeeps, mass-sloganeering targeting the losing parties and inviting students for celebrations – This summed up the college elections on Wednesday.
The results in most colleges were announced by 2.30 pm. As soon as the results were announced, celebrations broke out. A candidate of Sanatan Dharm Hostel Union (SDHU) + Sanatan Dharm Students Union (SDSU), Jaideep Singh from SD College, Sector 32 was elected as the president. Last year too, the president of the students council at SD college was from the same party.
At DAV College, Sector 10, the alliance of Hindustan Students Association (HSA) and Himachal Students Union (HIMSU) won all the four seats of office-bearers of President, Vice President, Secretary and Joint Secretary, by over 200 votes, leaving behind the strong parties on the campus – NSUI, SOPU, SOI, INSO and ABVP. Falit Sharma was elected as the president of the student council, with 950 votes polled.
At Sri Guru Gobind Singh College (SGGSC), Sector 26, the alliance of Students Organisation of India (SOI) and Indian National Students Organisation (INSO) also swept all the four seats. Jagthar Singh, with a total of 1,205 votes polled, was elected as the president of the students council. Last year, a candidate from an alliance of SOPU+CSU+HSA_NSUI was elected as the president at SGGSC, Sector 26.
It was only at Post Graduate Government College for Commerce and Business Administration (PGGCBA), Sector 42, that National Students Union of India (NSUI) in an alliance with Hindustan Students Association (HSA) managed to win three seats – president, vice president and joint secretary. The post of General Secretary was secured by the alliance of ABVP and PUSU. Mohammad Bilal, a final year B.Com student, was elected as the president of the college.
At PGGC-11, a new students union which was formed a few months ago — Shaheed Bhagat Singh Students Union (SBSU) won the seat of the presidential candidate. Sombir, a final year student was elected as the president and at PGGC-46, Anurag Gulati, a candidate of SOPU which was in alliance with NSUI,PUSU, HSA and GGSU was elected president.
However, at MCM DAV College, Sector 36, Dev Samaj College, Sector 36 and PGGCG-11, the presidential candidates were elected unopposed and at Dev Samaj College, Sector 45, Karishma was elected the president, while at SGGSC for Women, Sukriti became the president and at PGGCG-42, Gurpreet Kaur was elected president.
