The season gets a vibrant start with trunk shows by Raw Mango and Upasana
The garden is in full bloom outside designer Karishma Singhals studio,KMa in Sector 9,Chandigarh. Its hard to imagine that behind the foliage there exists an equally colourful world of fabrics and drapes. A fashion studio that maintains a charming,down-to-earth look with its brick walls and cobbled pathway,KMa is currently hosting a trunk show of saris by Raw Mango,a label by Sanjay Garg, along with organic cotton ensembles by Upasana,a Pondicherry-based label.
When it comes to saris, there couldnt be a better representation in the city than the one by Archana Singhal,Karishmas mother and also the mentor behind the KMa label. Be it the crisply-starched cottons or the rustling silks, the senior Singhal has always turned heads. Given their own liking for Chanderi saris, the Singhals roped in Raw Mango to debut in the city. The collection is a riot of colours bringing in saffron, red, mustard and fuschia. Chanderi fabric is very summer-friendly and I really liked the Raw Mango designs, which any sari-lover will appreciate, said Archana. For the uninitiated, the Raw Mango label by entrepreneur-designer Garg comprises of contemporary handwoven fabrics such as saris, stoles and fabrics. The saris have found favour with celebrities such as Mini Mathur,Bipasha Basu,Shallu Jindal and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan. The collection at KMa looks fun with its pop colours and the subtle designs that will appeal to a younger age group as well. In signature Raw Mango style, the saris have been coordinated with interesting fabrics for blouses.
Also part of the trunk show is a collection by Upasana. Based out of Auroville in Pondicherry, the collection in organic cotton is summer-friendly. With Turkish trousers, crinkled skirts, tunics and dhoti pants, the collection is inspired by traditional cuts, designs and fabrics, interpreted in a contemporary way. Theres a range of accessories as well pocket-friendly at that. The use of organic cotton coupled with the modern styling is what we really liked about the label, said Karishma, whose own summer collection presents chikankari in a contemporary way. Weddings are now a round-the-year affair. These days, destination weddings are the norm and I have put together a collection of shift dresses and gowns that can be worn at the beach or a summer wedding, said the designer.
