60-year-old held for molesting minor

A 60-year-old man was arrested for allegedly molesting a minor after locals brought the accused to the police after a sound thrashing in Manimajra on Sunday evening.

The residents suspected the man,Sita Ram,a resident of Indira Colony,of wrong-doing when they saw the girl,the 7-year-old daughter of a labourer,crying in his custody. Upon questioning,the accused could not explain his relationship with the child.

The incident came to light around 8 pm when passers-by noticed the girl on the roadside. The accused had stopped there after his vehicle broke down.

According to the police,Ram picked up the girl from the Panjab University campus this afternoon on the pretext of taking her for a ride on his scooty. He then took her to a secluded place,removed her clothes and allegedly molested her. The girl also alleged that the man took her to Shashtri Nagar in Manimajra and forced himself upon her.

Initially,the Manimajra police tried to persuade their Sector-11 counterparts to register the case as the crime occurred there. But Sector-11 SHO Sukhbir Rana stated that they could not take action as they had not received any complaint. In the end,Manimajra police station SHO Kehar Singh booked the accused for molestation under Section 354 of the IPC. We are investigating the incident, he said.
