A 35-Year-Old man under treatment at the psychiatric ward of Central Jail,Ambala,on Thursday was convicted of “brutally’’ murdering his own daughter in 2011.

Dhana Ram,of Indra Colony, was held guilty of murder by district and sessions judge Anita Chaudhary. The judge, however, acquitted him of raping her as it was not proved in the medical report.

Prosecution counsel Amit Parmar said that the defence counsel had taken the plea of “unsoundness’’ of mind of the accused as the reason for the incident, but after the report from the PGI that he was fit to stand trial, the plea was turned down by the court.

The court will pronounce the quantum of punishment in the case on Friday.

As per the prosecution and defence arguments and the police report in the case before the court, the accused had murdered his daughter by hitting her with the tawa late at night on October 15,2011. This awoke his wife who tried to resist his bid to kill his daughter, but the accused also hit her. The girl died due to the brutal assault.

Thirty-five-year-old Dhana Ram was working as a labourer. His wife had told the court that he was under the “ treatment of a tantrik”.
