149 school buses challaned

In its bid to crack down on school buses violating traffic rules,the Chandigarh Traffic Police today initiated a special drive from 6:30 am to 9 am at various nakas near government and private schools in the city.

In its bid to crack down on school buses violating traffic rules,the Chandigarh Traffic Police today initiated a special drive from 6:30 am to 9 am at various nakas near government and private schools in the city. A total of 149 school buses and 51 autorickshaws carrying schoolchildren were challaned during the drive.

The police issued challans for various violations such as incomplete documents and missing name plates.

However,major challans were issued for overloading and driving without uniforms. A total of 14 of the 51 auto rickshaws challaned were found to be plying without meter.

“The drive has been initiated to keep a check on the school buses and autorickshaws carrying schoolchildren and to check the menace they pose by ignoring traffic rules. The drive will continue for a few days,” DSP Traffic Vijay Kumar said.

“Most of the bus staff was issued challans for not following the guidelines. The association will make an attempt to overcome these violations in the future,” said General Secretary of the Chandigarh School Bus Operator Welfare Association,Nirmal Singh.

The Private School Association President H S Mamik said that this did not come in the ambit of the schools as it was the responsibility of the school bus operators to follow the norms.
