Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah’s son and former Congress MLA Yathindra Siddaramaiah has found himself in a controversy following the emergence circulation of a video in which he claimed to have distributed iron boxes and cookers to members of the Madiwala (washermen) community in the Varuna constituency before the Assembly elections.

The video was of an event of the Madiwala community at Nanjangud in the Mysuru district on Friday. During his speech, Yathindra purportedly said, “Cookers and iron boxes were given away, and Nanjappa (Madiwala community leader) ensured that they were distributed. I was supposed to attend the event, but then I could not. My father attended the event. This ensured that the community stood by my father (to win the Assembly elections in 2023 from the Varuna assembly seat).”

Soon after the video went viral, former chief minister and BJP leader Basavaraj Bommai demanded the Election Commission of India (ECI) to take note of Yathindra’s statement. There is already a petition pending against Siddaramaiah, and ECI must take this issue seriously, said Bommai.

Following the ire of the Opposition, Yathindra, who was the Varuna MLA from 2018 to 2023, claimed that the items were neither distributed by his father nor the Congress. He said the items were distributed to ensure his victory, not his father’s.

He said that he was yet to decide whether he would contest from Varuna and it was done before the election code of conduct came into effect. The items were gifts distributed by Madiwala community leaders, he said.
