In the wake of a leopard being sighted at an apartment in Bengaluru, Karnataka Environment Minister Eshwar Khandre Tuesday said modern technologies like thermal imaging cameras and drones are being used to nab the wild animal.

The leopard was sighted on the premises of the Salarpuria Cadenza apartment complex Sunday.

Police personnel have also been deployed around apartment complexes in the area.

“Cages have been placed in places where the leopard’s movement was tracked. Forest officials are working day and night. A team from Mysuru has also arrived in Bengaluru to capture the leopard. A team of 70 forest personnel are trying to capture the leopard. Leopard will be captured and returned to the forest soon,” the minister said.

He asked the residents not to panic. “It is natural to have anxiety when leopards stray into urban areas. Caution is necessary. Residents should not let their children play on the road alone. People should not travel alone at night. The authorities have issued cautionary advice to the apartments in Kudlu Gate and Iblur,” he said.

Khandre said the leopard could have come from Bannerghatta National Park. “After the capture of the leopard, its health status will be checked and it will be released back into the forest area,” he added.
