Karnataka’s forest department on Tuesday launched a system to register FIRs online in cases related to wildlife and forests. Called Garudakshi, the system will be implemented on a pilot basis in the Bengaluru Urban, Bhadravathi, Sirsi and Male Mahadeshwara Wildlife Sanctuary divisions.

“Based on the response to the initiative at various divisions, it will be implemented in all divisions of the state in phases,” Forest, Ecology and Environment Minister Eshwar Khandre said.

The system will be modelled on the online FIR system in place for police.

Once the software is implemented, registering FIRs using the Garudakshi portal will be made compulsory, the minister added.

The software was developed by the forest department and the Wildlife Trust of India. Garudakshi, according to the minister, will aid in keeping track of the increasing number of cases related to wildlife and forests and ensure that the guilty are brought to book.

Until now, FIRs of the forest department were handwritten and the Government was unable to assess the number of chargesheets filed in thousands of cases registered by the department.

The portal will auto-generate formats for various reports and complaints. In addition, the software consists of a Legacy Case Registration Module, Online Forest Offence Registration, Investigation Module and Reporting and Analytics Module. Existing complaints in the department will be digitised.

The portal will also allow the public to register complaints on forest offences using mobile phones or email addresses, the minister said.
