Portfolios for Karnataka ministers out: Siddaramaiah keeps Finance, Dy CM DK Shivakumar to preside over Irrigation, Bengaluru development

A notification dated May 28 on behalf of the Governor of Karnataka, Thaawarchand Gehlot, announced the portfolios allocated to all 34 ministers in the newly formed state Cabinet. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has kept the Finance minister portfolio for himself, while his deputy DK Shivakumar will preside over Irrigation and Bengaluru City Development departments.

Besides the Finance ministry, the CM also kept Cabinet Affairs, Department of Personnel and Administrative Reforms, Intelligence, Information, IT and BT, Infrastructure Development and all unallocated portfolios. Shivakumar was assigned Major and Medium Irrigation and Bengaluru City Development, including the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), Bangalore Development Authority, Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board, Bangalore Metropolitan Region Development Authority and the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited, a notification by the Cabinet Affairs and Personnel and Administrative Secretariat read.

Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge’s son Priyank Kharge is the new Rural Development and Panchayati Raj minister.

G Parameshwara, who held the Home Ministry in the previous Siddaramaiah government from 2015 to 2017, has been allocated the home ministry in the state again. MB Patil was assigned new Large and Medium Industries ministry and KJ Geroge, the Energy ministry in the state.

Further, Ramalinga Reddy has been made the minister for Transport and Muzrai, Dinesh Gundu Rao is the Health and Family Welfare minister.

Laxmi R Hebbalkar, the lone woman in the Cabinet, will preside over the Women and Child Development, with HK Patil being the new Law and Parliamentary Affairs.

The Congress had released a list of 24 legislators, a week after coming to power in the state.  The swearing-in ceremony took place place at 11:45 am at the Raj Bhavan in Bengaluru, in the presence of Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot.

The list of ministers consists of eight Lingayats, including sole woman minister Lakshmi Hebbalkar; seven from Scheduled Caste (SC) communities; five Vokkaligas; two Muslims; three from Scheduled Tribe (ST) communities; six from Other Backward Classes (OBC) groups, including one Maratha; one Brahmin, one Christian, and one Jain.
