As the policemen saw a tractor speeding with a load of sand, they tried to stop it and gave it a chase. However, the driver of the vehicle hit the two-wheeler of the policemen and ran over Chavan while Pramod fell.
Days after a head constable was killed by alleged members of the sand mafia in the Kalaburagi district of Karnataka, the police Saturday arrested the prime accused who had been absconding.
On June 14, head constable Mysore Chavan, 51, and constable Pramod were deputed to monitor the alleged pilferage of sand from a mining lease site in Nelogi. As the policemen saw a tractor speeding with a load of sand, they tried to stop it and gave it a chase. However, the driver of the vehicle hit the two-wheeler of the policemen and ran over Chavan while Pramod fell.
According to the police, Saibanna Karatagi, the tractor owner, and his brother Siddanna were in the vehicle when Chavan was killed. Siddana was arrested the day after the incident and Saibanna went into hiding in Mandewal under the Jewargi taluk of the district.
An officer said when the police went to arrest Saibanna based on a tip-off, the accused attacked sub-inspector Yadrami Basavaraj with a knife. In self-defence, another sub-inspector Sangamesh fired a shot at Saibanna’s right leg and arrested him.
Basavaraj and Saibanna are currently receiving treatment at a hospital.
Meanwhile, Isha Pant, Superintendent of Police, Kalaburagi, suspended three police officers on charges of negligence of duty. The suspended officials are Jewargi police Inspector Bheemanagowda Biradar, Nelogi police Sub-Inspector Gowtham and Constable Rajashekar.
