Vaghela blames Modi for building ‘substandard’ homes for the poor

Congress leader and former chief minister Shankersinh Vaghela met the affected families and held Chief Minister Narendra Modi responsible for building “substandard” homes for the poor.

Two days after the collapse of three-storey buildings constructed by Vadodara Urban Development Authority (VUDA) in the Atladara area of the city, veteran Congress leader and former chief minister Shankersinh Vaghela met the affected families and held Chief Minister Narendra Modi responsible for building “substandard” homes for the poor.

Demanding a judicial inquiry into the disaster,Vaghela accused Modi of allowing “high-handedness and corruption” to prevail over the lives of the poor who were killed in the building collapse.

Speaking to reporters after visiting the accident site,Vaghela said it was clear that corruption by the BJP government had taken the lives of 11 people who were killed in the building collapse.

“These are the same homes that are constructed by the Gujarat Housing Board and the CM proudly speaks of these projects. In fact,he is the one who handed over keys of these homes to the people with great pomp and show. But he never turned around to see the quality of the construction material of this building or the high-handed attitude of the officers responsible for its upkeep. The CM is guilty of this accident and must take moral responsibility for it. This is a cold-blooded murder,” Vaghela said.

Civil engineering experts have pointed out that the iron rods used to construct the beams of the building were of poor quality and not even used in the adequate quantity,he added. “There is absolutely nothing in the name of pillars for this structure. The cement is hardly even noticeable between the exposed bricks. It is right there for anyone to see. This is the level of corruption that has happened in the construction of these buildings. Who will trust the Gujarat Housing Board after this?”

Vaghela said that the committee formed to probe the disaster, which will be headed by retired Chief Secretary Manjula Subramaniam,is nothing but an eyewash by the state government to cover up for its own faults.
