Vadodara: Two arrested after ‘eggs hurled’ at Ganesha procession, minor apprehended

Three persons, including a minor, were nabbed for allegedly hurling eggs at a Lord Ganesha procession on the Panigate Mandvi road in the wee hours of Tuesday, police said.
While the two adult accused, who belong to another religion, have been booked for hurting religious sentiments and defiling idols with intent to insult, a process in the case of the Child in Conflict with law (CCL) has been initiated for the minor.
Vadodara City Joint Commissioner of Police Dr Leena Patil said on Tuesday said several teams of the City police, including the Detection of Crime Branch (DCB), Special Operations Group (SOG), Local Crime Branch of the Zones, as well as the city police, were tasked with tracking down the accused.
Patil said, “The incident occurred around 2.30-3am on Tuesday, just as the organisers of a Ganesha pandal from the Manjalpur area of the city were passing by the City Police station on the Panigate Mandvi Road. Eggs were hurled at the procession, some of which defiled the idol and also caused injury…”
The accused are residents of old city area.
“The organisers immediately informed the City police station and the officials reached the spot in minutes, including teams of the DCB, SOG and others; we averted any big incident from taking place. We lodged the FIR at City police station for hurting religious sentiments, defiling religious idol, causing injury and provoking breach of peace… Process has also been initiated in the case of the CCL as per the provisions (of Juvenile Justice Act)…”
Patil said, “Several teams were formed to identify the accused, scan CCTV cameras and look for clues through human and technical sources. The accused were identified in a matter of hours… They will be interrogated thoroughly. If more names are revealed, they will be booked accordingly and other sections may also be invoked.”
