Police said that Patra, a labourer in a textile firm, had been staying in Surat for the last 15 years (Express Archives)The Surat Police Tuesday handed over a man, accused in a murder case, to the Odisha Police. The accused was in the custody of the Surat police and officers in Odisha were looking for him.
As per Kapodara Police in Surat, the accused has been identified as Babaji alias Baji Patra (39), a resident of Surat’s Bombay colony. Police said that Patra, a labourer in a textile firm, had been staying in Surat for the last 15 years.
Baji came to know a few months back that his elder sister Laxmi Mohanty, who had separated from her husband and was staying at her parent’s house in Odisha’s Ganjam district, had an affair with a man from the village. Police said that he left Surat on January 14 for his village, and started living with his mother and sister there.
As per police, a fight ensued between the brother and the sister over some allegations brought against her by the villagers. On January 16, Baji called his sister to the terrace, where he killed her by slitting her throat and repeatedly hitting her on the head with a stone, said the police. Hearing her screams, their mother came to the terrace and tried to stop Baji, but failed.As per Surat Police, Baji ran from there and came back to Surat on January 18.
Meanwhile, Kapodara Police received inputs about the murder from an informer. A case was registered into the matter based on deceased’s father Shatrughana Patra’s complaint at Aska Police Station on January 16. During interrogation, Baji broke down and confessed to the murder.
Later, Kapodara Police Inspector M B Asura got in touch with Aska Police Station and informed them about the accused’s arrest. A police team reached Surat on Tuesday and took custody of Baji.
Inspector Asura said, “All credit goes to the local informer. Acting on the tip-off, we caught him and during the interrogation, he confessed. A murder case had been registered against him in Odisha.”
